Stirrup cups (or hunting cups) date back to the late 18th and 19th century. They were traditionally presented to riders on horseback prior to leaving or returning from a hunt. Their feet were still in the stirrup; hence the name. They were specifically created to be comfortable in the hand and to hold a smaller capacity so the contents could be drunk quickly. Because of their association with the hunt, the cup bases are usually in the form of a fox, stag, dog, or horse head.
Due to their unique, fun, and whimsical design, they have long been used to add some excitement to a bar or table scape. They make fantastic gifts as they a very decorative as well as functional conversation pieces to serve guests at a dinner or cocktail party.
