Yali Carved Gilt Wood Temple Guardian Architectural Ornament

Gorgeous antique Indian architectural ornament fashioned of carved and polychrome wood in the shape of a mythical demon beast or "Yali". They are often found adorning southern Indian temples as protectors. They take the shape of hybrid beings, usually part lion and part bird and a distinctive trunk.

This example is exceptionally carved with a particularly detailed design and feather patterns. It has a beautifully worn patina with traces of the polychrome and gilding still visible, adding to the richness and impact of the piece.
